GIVE ME YOUR EYES

Sermon Notes, June 2, 2013

Pastor Jan Sinozich and Rev. Gary Smith

The title of Sunday’s sermon was “Give Me Your Eyes.” It was based on Proverbs 30:4   The message started off with a video and slides of the tornado damage in Oklahoma and an opportunity to donate to Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, who are there, handing out Crisis Care Kits and helping people—sifting through debris, cleaning up, providing water and hot meals, with the local churches as distribution centers, as they always do in crises.  We are a church that puts hands and feet into action in a tragedy such as tornadoes, or hurricanes, or earthquakes, fires, or floods.

Proverbs is a book of nuggets of truth, of weighty messages from God.  Chapter 30 is full of the sayings of Agur, son of Jakeh—an oracle, or wise man.  Agur asks 5 questions in verse 4:

Who has gone up to heaven and come down?

Who has gathered up the wind in the hollow of his hands?

Who has wrapped up the waters in his cloak?

Who has established all the ends of the earth?

What is his name, and the name of his son?

Tell me if you know!”

These questions are asked by Agur to remind people of what God has done.  The answer is the same for all of them: “The God of us!”  We sing hymns in order to remember what God has done.  We know who is able.  The God of us!  He is the God who is able in times like these.  He has been, is now, and forever will be the God who is able.

God calls us to holiness.  Holiness calls us to reach out to others.  We are the hands and feet of Christ in our world today.  Holiness opens our eyes so we can see others as Jesus sees them.  It gives us compassion—caring enough to become involved.
