"FOR MOM," Proverbs 31

Sermon Notes, May 13, 2012

Pastor Phil Perkins

Pastor Phil’s sermon Sunday was titled “For Mom,” and was based on Proverbs 31.  It is to remind us of God.  A mother’s love is closest to God’s love, especially when she says, “Don’t be afraid.  I’ll go with you.”

The first few verses of the chapter are motherly advice, warning her son to be careful of the women he chooses, against strong drink, and to stand up for those who can’t stand up for themselves.

Verses 10 through 31 describe the virtuous woman.  She is an example for women to strive for, and for husbands and children to appreciate.  She makes many sacrifices for her family, giving up her goals to help her children reach theirs.  Ephesians 6:1-3 tells us to honor our parents, which is the first commandment with promise.  The selfless acts of mothers reflect God in his creation.  Men reflect one dimension of God’s love, women another, and both are needed

Verses 20-24 speak of the compassion of the virtuous woman; verse 25 of her character, and verse 26 of the good counsel she gives.  The ideal woman is Christlike.  She is a role model, not just for women, but for all of us.

The last four verses tell us to praise the woman who honors God.  When we do, God smiles.  He strengthens godly women.  What would you say or do if she died?  Would you regret not having said something encouraging to her, or having said or done something you shouldn’t have?  What will matter in 100 years?  Remember Erma Bombeck’s advice, and live today as if you were dying tomorrow.

God invites us to come home to Him.  Just like we go home to Mom’s, He wants us to be with him.
