MINISTRY: MOTIVE, MISSION, MINDSET, 3

Sermon Notes, June 8, 2014
Rev. Jan Sinozich

Pastor Jan’s sermon Sunday was the third in the series titled “Ministry: Motive, Mission, Mindset,” and was based on John 21:15-25.  Jesus asked Peter “Do you love me?”  He asks us the same question.  He calls us to serve Him because we love Him.  That’s the motive.  The mission is clear:  “Feed my sheep.”  We serve Him by serving the ones He loves.
The mindset we need to have is “Focus.”  As we multi-task, we tend to focus on the problem: it temporarily consumes us.  Jesus had been talking to Peter, re-affirming His call to ministry.   In verses 20-23, Peter turns around (taking his focus off Jesus) and sees “the disciple Jesus loves.”  He asks the Lord, “What about him?”   Jesus answers him, “If I want him to live until I return, what’s that to you?  You follow me.”   Peter compares himself to John, but Jesus calls him to focus.  God’s plans don’t need our approval.
“Do you love me?”  Relationship with Jesus is where everything starts.  We are no match for Satan, but we are not on our own.  Jesus is with us and works through us.
“Feed my sheep.”  Take ownership of God’s call on your life. He doesn’t call the equipped, He equips those He calls.  He calls us to places where we have to rely on Him.
“Follow me.”  Focus on Him.  Take time for God.  We each must fulfill our own call.  If we follow Him, we won’t fall in the ditch.
