AVAILABILITY: PERSPECTIVE OF SERVING GOD

Sermon Notes, February 9, 2014
Pastor Jan Sinozich

Pastor Jan’s sermon was titled “Availability: The Perspective of Serving God.”  She started off with a story about the London transit system that was receiving lots of complaints because the buses drove right by the bus stops without stopping even though people were in line waiting to be picked up.  The authorities issued a statement: “It is impossible for us to maintain our schedules if we are always having to stop and pick up passengers.”  They thought their job was to keep a schedule, when really their job was to pick up passengers—their perspective was wrong: they failed to do what they were created to do.
What are we created to do?  God made us for relationship, with him and with others.  Ephesians 2:8-10 says we’re created to do good works that he’s prepared for us, and he tells us how to do them (in response to what he’s done in us) and helps us do it (we join him).  We’re created to serve God in everything we do.
How are we to accomplish what we are created to do?  We are all busy.  So were people in the Bible that God called to serve Him.  They knew how to work.  God is looking for workers, and He has a training plan.  (Luke 16:10)  God calls busy people to work, in everything they’re already doing.
How does this work?  Maybe we need to look at what we do in a different way.  Faith is our daily life.  Service is what we do—everything we do.  Look at the things we have to accomplish every day in light of God’s mission—as part of God’s mission.  We are to be available to God in everything we do—all day, every day.  We are to be faithful in the small things.
If we’re serving God in response to what He’s done in our lives, with a true perspective, we see everyone we come in contact with as a child of God.  We’re up for the challenge even when people are difficult.  Serving God is our response to the things God brings into our day.  (Matthew 25:35)  It’s seeing our world intentionally with a true, godly perspective.  We live out our worship.
