Sermon Notes, March 10, 2013
Pastor Jan Sinozich
Pastor Jan’s
sermon was titled “Journey to the Cross: Hope, part 2” and it was based on Luke
15. At the beginning of the chapter, we
see Jesus in a public place, with the people.
Jesus sees people: he is all about people. He is telling stories, one of them being the
story of The Prodigal Son. There are
three major relationships in this story: the father and the younger son; the
father and the older son; and the older son and the younger son.
The relationship
between the father and the younger son represents the relationship between God
and the world. They can’t see that
discipline makes freedom possible; the discipline to know the rules and obey
them. The world is so blinded by what
they can’t do that they can’t see what’s available to them.
The relationship
between the father and the older son represents the relationship between God
and the church. The older son is with
the father daily—he works within the parameters. He keeps the rules, but misses the joy; he
feels like a slave.
The older son
exhibits his anger toward his brother: there is no compassion or relationship
there. He feels like his father rewards
the “bad son.” He forgets that he is the
heir. Does this represent the
relationship between the church and the world?
The father
represents Jesus. He sees both the world
and the church with compassion. Do we
see our community like Jesus does? He
sees people. What matters? People. Who did he die for? And who did he live for? People.
In verse 17 he invites everyone to come to his banquet.

Jesus tells us,
his church, to love God and love others.
Pastor Jan closed with the wish that there had been a verse 33 in Luke
15, showing a right relationship between the Father and the church, and the
church and the world.
