MOTIVE, MISSION, MINDSET, 1

Sermon Notes, May 18, 2014
Rev. Jan Sinozich

Pastor Jan’s sermon Sunday was titled “Motive, Mission, Mindset,” and was based on John 21: 15-25.
God calls.  He grows us into His call.  We don’t know what God is going to say; we need reassurance that he’s really called us.  In this scripture, after Peter has denied Jesus and his crucifixion and resurrection, Jesus is reaffirming his call to Peter: “Feed my sheep.”  He has called us to love God and love others through discipleship in simple and relational ways.  We are to “make disciples of the nations.”
Maybe we need encouragement—there are examples in the Bible of others who were called who needed encouragement: Moses was called to deliver Israel, but things didn’t work out as he expected.  After 40 years in the desert God called him to lead his people.  Moses said “I can’t.”  But God said “You can.”  God had not forgotten, and God had not given up his plan.
Remember Elijah?  He was God’s prophet and God had done many miraculous things through him.  But when Jezebel threatened, he ran.  God met him when he was discouraged and reassured him of his call.
In John 21we read about the disciples fishing all night but catching nothing until Jesus came and told them to throw their nets on the right side, and they caught 153 fish.  Jesus met their physical needs, cooking breakfast over a fire.  Peter remembered another fire, and his denial.  But Jesus restored him after the resurrection. He forgave him, and restored him to ministry.
In verse 15, Jesus asks “Do you love me?”  He brings Peter to the core of why he can and must serve.  One motive for ministry is the love for God that overflows into who we are.   Not being people-pleasers.  God’s love is stronger than the enemy.   Peter’s human love failed him in the face of the enemy, when he denied Jesus at the crucifixion.  Jesus restored his relationship, and restored his ministry and calling.  Only in Him will ministry happen.  Love God and He will use you.
