ONE NECESSARY THING

Sermon Notes, August 4, 2013

Pastor Jan Sinozich

Pastor Jan’s sermon was titled “One Necessary Thing.”  Her scripture reference was Luke 10: 38-42. A woman named Martha invites our Lord to eat at her house.  But while she is getting everything ready, her sister Mary sits down at Jesus’ feet to listen to what he’s saying.  Martha is frustrated and asks Jesus to make Mary help.  He tells her she’s fussing, focusing on the wrong things.  He says, “Only one thing is necessary, and Mary has chosen it—it’s the main course, and won’t be taken from her.”  Mary chose to listen to God’s word through Jesus.

God’s Word is the one necessary thing.  Why is it so important?  It tells us who we are.  Some people are convinced of their own importance, while others see themselves as worthless.   God’s Word helps us to know ourselves better.  Looking in the mirror of His Word we know ourselves better because we know God better; the God who made us in His image.  Without His Word we, like Martha, become distracted and lose our focus.

What Jesus told Martha, He also told the crowds.  In Matthew 6:33, he tells us not to worry about our needs.  Instead he says “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

God’s mirror is different than the world’s mirror.  1 Samuel 16:7 says that the world looks on the outside of a person, but God sees the inside—the heart.  That’s why His Word is so necessary.  God sees us in a way the world does not.  God shapes us in a way the world cannot.  His Word helps us become more like His perfect son, more like He made us to be.

God’s Word is our altar, where we align ourselves with God, where we worship and are thankful for His gift.  Studying God’s Word is the Christian coming home, seeing God in the world, being His emissary in the world, and enjoying the provisions He gives us.  The one necessary thing in our life is the story of our salvation, God’s Word.

We need to live it, every day.
