ICON OF THE INVISIBLE GOD

Sermon Notes, November 4, 2012

Pastor Jan Sinozich

Pastor Jan’s sermon was titled “Icon of the Invisible God,” and her scripture reference was Colossians 1:15-23.  An icon is an image, a picture.  Jesus is the image of God.  He is the biggest picture of God.  Without a picture of Jesus, you can’t know God.  Jesus is the Image of the Supreme Being.  He is the Supreme Creator.  And He is the Head of the Church.

Paul the apostle is at Ephesus.  Epaphrus has been called to preach at Colossae, and he goes to Paul with the problems there.  Paul writes a letter.

In verse 15 we read that Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.  He is the way we can reach God.  He is the exact likeness—a reflection of Him.

Verse 16 tells us He is the supreme creator. (John 1:1)  Nothing exists He didn’t create.  Everything continues to exist because He is alive.  He is the sustainer—He holds everything together. (v. 17)

He is the head of the church, the body of believers. (v. 18)  He is the leader and guide.  He alone has first place.  He is the firstborn among the dead, which means we will rise, too.

Jesus exchanged His life and death for ours.  Through Jesus we are reconciled to God. (v. 19)  We’re His sworn enemies as sinners, and only Jesus can reconcile us to God, who hates sin. (Philippians 2:9)

We show our obedience to Jesus by what we do for Him, through our church, as part of the body of Christ.  He is transforming us, morphing us, into His image.
