Sermon Notes, January 22, 2012

PastorC.M.’s message was titled “Living with Integrity,” and his text was Proverbs3:22. He began his sermon with a pictureof the Titanic, a ship that was billed as unsinkable, because it wasbuilt with compartments. Supposedly,if there was a problem, the compartment could be sealed, making it safe for therest of the ship. The problem was thatthe captain kept moving forward, allowing water from the iceberg’s gash to getinto more and more compartments, which actually made the ship sink faster thanever. We sometimes get ourselves intoTitanic problems by compartmentalizing our lives in different areas, thinkingit is safe to live this way. Ourintegrity is compromised. What isintegrity? “The quality or state ofbeing complete or undivided or incorruptible.”

Why does integrity matter?

Itpleases God. “The Lord hates peoplewith twisted hearts, but He delights in those who have integrity.” (Proverbs3:22, NLT) God is absolute truth. He wants us to be like Him.

Itaffects others. “Good people wholive honest lives will be a blessing to their children.” It’s a wonderful heritage to have an honestfather. Our integrity affects ourfamily. It also affects otherpeople. “People who do not believe areliving all around you…so live good lives. Then they will see the good things you do, and they will give glory toGod.” (1 Peter 2:12, ICB)

Itblesses me. “Moral character makesfor smooth traveling; an evil life is a hard life. Good character is the best insurance.” (Proverbs 11:5-6, Message) The word evilis live spelled backwards; lots ofpeople live their lives backwards. “People with integrity have a firm footing, but those who follow crookedpaths will slip and fall.” (Proverbs 10:9 NLT)

How do I live with integrity?

Alwaysspeak the truth. “The Lord hatesliars, but is pleased with those who keep their word.” (Proverbs 12:22, GN) Do what you say you’re going to do. Don’t make excuses for what you don’tdo. “Let our lives lovingly express thetruth in all things—speaking truly, dealing truly, living truly.” (Ephesians 4:15, Amp) We can lie with silence, or not tellingeverything someone needs to know. Tellthe truth in love. “Don’t talk out ofboth sides of your mouth; avoid careless banter, white lies, and gossip.”(Proverbs 4:24, Mes) These things betrayour integrity.

Standfor what’s right. “Ourresponsibility is never to oppose the truth, but to stand for the truth at alltimes.” (2 Corinthians 13:8, NLT) Ifthings are wrong, we need to stand up for what’s right. “When a person knows the right thing to do,but doesn’t do it, then he is sinning.” (James 4:17, ICB) “Love and faithfulness keep a king safe;through love his throne is made secure.” (Proverbs 20:28, NIV) Sound leadership is love and integrity.

Stayclean. “You are to live clean,innocent lives as children of God in a dark world full of crooked and perversepeople. Let your lives shine brightlybefore them.” (Philippians 2:15b, NLT) Noah was the only one in his generation whose life showed what hebelieved. Choose the right kind offriends—bad company corrupts good character. “It is better to be a poor person who has integrity than to be rich anddouble-dealing.” (Proverbs 28:6,GWT) Value integrity more than image. Our world cares more about how we look thanwho we are. “I will lead a life ofintegrity in my own home. I will refuseto look at anything vile and vulgar…” (Psalm 101:2-3, NLT) Watch whatyou watch.

“God’sdivine power gives us everything we need for life and godliness. This power was given to us through knowingJesus who called us by His own glory and integrity.” (2 Peter 1:3, GWT) God wants to be proud of us for the way weconduct our lives. He has the ability tohelp us when we fall. Like a proudearthly parent, He likes to say, “That’s my kid!” when we live with integrity.

PastorC.M.’s sermon was titled “It All Starts With Commitment, Making a Difference inOur World.” The text was 2 Chronicles16:9, “The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen thosewhose hearts are fully committed to Him.” (NLT)

1776 a group of colonists declared theirindependence from King George. The lastsentence of the declaration stated “Andfor the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection ofDivine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes andour sacred honor.” These colonistscommitted themselves completely: they were all in. It takes only a few who are totally committedto make a difference. Join hands withthe One who created all and in saw you 2012. Let him work in you to make our world a better place. Who am I going to live FOR? Live to please God. Do something by joining hands with Someonewho has it all. Here are five commitmentsthat will change your life.

I commit my life to Christ. “Ifyou confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart thatGod raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9, LT) Before I can do good for God, I must knowGod. Jesus made it simple: recognizethat Jesus is God’s son; He paid the price for my sin; ask for forgiveness; andinvite Him in. The benefits of thisdecision are that He gives me Power for living, Purpose in life, and thePromise of Heaven when I die.

I commit to be a member of His family. “God has given us the privilege of being bornagain so that we are now members of God’s own family.” (1 Peter 1:3, LB) We’re not meant to be on our own. “Be devoted to one another.” (Romans 12:10,NIV) We need a church family around us,to support us, and to be supported by us.

Icommit to be a model of the life of Christ. Demonstrate what it’s like to be like Jesus. “Let us go on…and become mature in ourunderstanding, as strong Christians ought to be.” (Hebrews 6:1, LB) Becoming mature takes time. “Commit yourself to instruction; attune yourears to hear words of knowledge.” (Proverbs 23:12, NLT) Get God’s Book inside your head. “They must be committed to the revealedtruths of the Christian faith and must live with a clear conscience.” (1Timothy 3:9) Demonstrate God’s gracefrom within. Demonstrate God’s gracefrom within. We are to beChrist-followers.

Icommit to be a minister of His grace. “God has given each of you some special abilities; be sure to use themto help each other; passing on to others God’s many kinds of blessings.”(1 Peter 4:10 LB) He has blessed us tobless others. “Your attitude must belike My own, for I, the Messiah, did not come to be served, but to serve.” (Matthew 20:28, LB) God put you on this earth for a purpose. Useyour abilities, talents, and possessions to help each other.

Icommit to be messenger of His love. The bestnews is that God loves me. He willforgive me. He has a plan for you. “For God was in Christ, restoring the worldto Himself…This is the wonderful message He has given to us to tellothers. We are Christ’sambassadors. God is using us to speak toothers.” (2 Corinthians 5:19-20) We carry the message of His love to theworld. “Remember why He is waiting. He is giving us time to get His massage ofsalvation out to others.” (2 Peter 3:15, LB) You don’t have to do big stuff; just do something to demonstratethe love of Jesus.

Jesus’ examples of commitment: “We aren’tsaved by knowing the commandments of God because we can’t and don’tkeep them. But God put into effect adifferent plan to save us. He sent Hisown Son in a human body like ours…and destroyed sin’s control over us by givingHimself as a sacrifice for our sins.” (Romans 8:3, LB)

“He gave His life to free usfrom every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people,totally committed to doing what is right.” (Titus 2:14 NLT)

“When you think of what He’s donefor you, is this too much to ask?” (Romans 12:1, LB)

“Commit everything you do tothe Lord. Trust Him to help you do it,and He will.” (Psalm 37:5)

Like the founding fathers in theDeclaration of Independence, we need to be totally committed.

Praises from Cindy Padgett

Dear Family,
I've got great news. Brenda's, my sister, biopsy came back free of cancer. Praise the Lord. Also her husband, Lou, received a great report from the doctor as well, and won't have to go back for another 10 weeks for a follow up. He is doing very well. Brenda asked that I thank you for all of your prayers.

Mom is home and doing very well. She is still waiting for the results of her test, but she feels she isn't bleeding anymore, nor are there any signs of it. She is holding her strength and doing well.

Tom has been exercising with his leg for two days in a row. He went outside yesterday and worked on our truck and today he went outside and cut wood with a log splitter. It wasn't much, just two pieces, but he did get out and walk in the yard for two days. Praise the Lord for that. It makes him feel whole to be able to do something, anything at this point is a blessing.

I feel soooo blessed and grateful for being first a child of our Almighty God, and secondly for having a church family that prays for us all. Thank you for your prayers, thoughts and calls. You are a big part of our lives.

Thefirst sermon of the New Year was titled “Forgetting the Past and going Forwardin 2012.” It was based on Ephesians3:20, “God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine orguess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing usaround but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us.” (TheMessage)

Scientistslooking through the Hubbell telescope have seen more galaxies than we canimagine, and the view is just a tiny opening in the vast universe God hascreated; God wants to do more for us than we can even think about. We should be living with an attitude ofanticipation and expectation. How are wegoing to get there?

InPhilippians 3:12-16, Paul says, “Not that I have already obtained all this, orhave already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for whichChrist Jesus took hold of me. Brothersand sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behindand strainin for what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize forwhich God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. All of us, then, who are mature should takesuch a view of things. And if on somepoint you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. Only let us live up to what we have alreadyattained.”

Tolive with a sense of expectancy, ForgettingYour Past is the first step. We havea tendency to think backwards. Memorycan be your friend or your enemy. Wefocus on what we didn’t do that we should’ve or what we did do that weshouldn’t have. Remember when youlearned to walk? You fell many times,but you got up and tried again many more times. Successful people have failed many times before they succeeded, amongthem Abraham Lincoln, P.H. Macy, and Michael Jordan. We need to learn from both our successes andour failures, and then forget them. Godforgets. “For I will forgive theiriniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.” (Jeremiah 31:34) He has chosen not to remember; it’s part ofthe covenant established when Jesus Christ died on the cross.

Thenext step is Focusing on Your Priorities. Paul’s priority in Philippians 3:14 was the Kingdom of God. “But seek ye first the kingdom of God…” (Matthew 6:33)Pastor C.M. illustrated this point with a story about a professor who filled agallon jar with big rocks, then asked the class “Is it full?” They all said “Yes.” Then he added some pea gravel and shook itin, asking again, “Is it full?” When theclass answered, “Yes,” he added some sand, which filtered down between therocks and gravel. This time when heasked the class if it was full, they began to catch on, so they weren’tsurprised when he poured water into the jar and it was full. We all have fulllives. If we put all the little thingsin first, we’ll never be able to get the big things in. What are the big rocks in your life? The big issue is the kingdom of God—getcloser to Him; know Him so we can expect more.

Thethird step to having an attitude of anticipation and expectation is Functioning in the Present. The busiest day of the world is SOMEDAY. Instead of putting it off, do it now. Mind God right now. Paul in prison was busy—writing letters tothe churches, instead of feeling sorry for himself or whining. We don’t want to be like Felix, who listenedto Paul and was almost persuaded to follow Christ. There’s no record that he ever found a “moreconvenient time.” We need to seize theday. As the psalmist says, “I madehaste, and delayed not to keep thy commandments.” (Psalm 119:60)

Tolive with an Ephesians 3:20 attitude, we need to forget the past, focus ourpriorities, and function in the present.

Tim's Surgery

Tim's surgery was a success. He is out of surgery (on his hand, specifically his fingers, which he injured in a log splitter a few years ago) and doing just fine. . . those nerve blocks work very well--Praise the Lord! The surgeon seems confident that this path will lead to a fully functioning pinky. We hope and pray so. Many thanks to all those who pray with us :-) !

Hey Church, here is a miracle and a long awaited answer to prayer!

First, one of our dogs who is 14 and senile, was let outside by a guest and wandered away on December 30th. We had 11 people looking for over 48 man hours all night until the next day and the day after. Today a distant neighbor called about another matter and mentioned he had seen a dog in Crooked Run on a sandbar. The boys went down and found him, soaking wet but still alive! He is at the vet's being warmed and hydrated. Outlook is positive! He apparently survived being in the Run for almost 4 days!

Second, after six years and much prayer, cory, my son-in-law, will be transferred to Culpeper as a mail carrier on January 14, 2012. No more 1.5 hour commute, and he gets to deliver mail again, which he loves.

TheChristmas Eve message was titled “God’s Christmas Gift for You,” with scripturefrom Luke 2:10-14. Christmas is allabout the fact that you matter to God. The idea of giving came from God: “Godso loved ... that He gave.”

“Theangel said, ‘Don’t be afraid! Ibring you the most joyful news ever announced, and it is foreveryone! Today your Savior was born…Heis Christ, the Lord…Give glory to God in heaven, and on earth let there bepeace among the people who please God.’” (Luke 2:10-11, 14 NCV) Some people are afraid of God. So He came as a baby so we wouldn’t bescared. He wants to relate to us—He’sthe God-man who lived among us.

ThisChristmas Accept God’s Gift of Happiness. God wants you to be happy, to enjoy Him and enjoy life. “…I bring youthe most joyful news ever announced” Jesus said “I came to give life—life in all its fullness.” (John10:10) Make room in your life for moreof Jesus. What are you filling your lifewith so there’s not room for more of Jesus?

Accept God’s Gift of Hope. Our greatest need is for a Savior, so He sentHis son. “…Today your Savior was born!” He gives forgiveness for the past (butdon’t minimize sin or what God did for us.) He doesn’t remember. “God did notsend his Son into the world to condemn it, but to save it.” (John 3:17 LB) He gives freedom for the present. Today is the day you can give all yourproblems to Him. He gives fulfillmentin the future. Let go of who I am, andlet Him do His job. Quit struggling; Hecan’t save you until you do.

Accept God’s gift of Harmony. He wants you to have good relationships. “…Let there be peace among the people.” He wants us to have a good relationship withHim. “God reconciled us to himselfthrough Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.” (2 Corinthians5:18) He wants us to have goodrelationships with others. Forgive thosewho have hurt you. “Thanks be to God forhis gift that is too wonderful for words.” (2 Corinthians 9:15) Accept God’sgift to you; life is too short not to enjoy it!

Cindy Padgett has requested prayer for her mother, Lois Parsons, who is still losing blood from her small intestine. Lois doesn't think her heart would be able to take surgery. Keep her in your prayers.

Cindy's husband, Tom, has some more tests to undergo. His blood test indicated that he may have multiple mylenoma (bone cancer). They will be doing a bone marrow test on January 3 to check for sure. This is one of the diseases you can get from Agent Orange; they say they can put it in remission, but it's not curable.

Please pray for strength and peace for Cindy, and for healing for her mom and Tom.

Themessage Sunday was titled “Why God Chose Mary,” with scripture from Luke1:26-55. God is looking for people Hecan use. He wants to use people to makea difference in His world. There werelots of women on earth when God chose Mary, and ordinary girl from an ordinaryfamily in an ordinary village. “God sentthe angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man namedJoseph… The virgin’s name was Mary.” (vs. 26-27) God chose Mary because she simply trustedHim. Mary’s initial reaction: “Confusedand disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. ‘Don’t befrightened, Mary’ the angel told her, ‘for God has decided to wonderfully blessyou!’” (vs. 29-30 LB) She didn’t let herfears control her. Possible fears:

· Fearof criticism – “What will everyone think?”

· Fearof the supernatural – “What will happen to me?”

· Fearof inadequacy – “How can I handle this?”

· Fearof change – “How will this change my life?”

· Fearof losing her life – according to Jewish law, she could be stoned.

The antidote tofear is to trust God.

Whattype of person does God use? God usespeople who desire to do His will. Not just on Sunday. He made eachof us for a purpose. We need to findwhat it is. “Then Mary responded, ‘Mysoul praises the Lord, my heart rejoices in God my Savior, because He has shownHis concern for His humble servant girl.’” (Luke 1:46-48 NCV) She was enthusiastic (from the Greek en and theos, in God) and humble. “I desire to do your will O my God…” (Psalm 40:8) “Our only goal is to please God…”(2Corinthians 5:9 NCV) Jesus came into theworld as a baby so God wouldn’t scare us, and so He would know what it was liketo be us. We are trophies of God’s grace:our goal should be to please Him. Heuses people who want to be used. What dowe desire to do most?

Goduses people who decide to pay the cost. We can’t pursue Him at the same time we’re pursuing something else. God’s plan was explained to Mary in verses31-33. Her response: “Mary said, ‘I amthe Lord’s servant, and I am willing to do whatever He wants. May everything you said come true.’” It cost Mary her reputation for a long time(Jesus was 30 before He did any miracles.) People may not understand. Jesussaid, “No one can be my disciple who does not carry his own cross and followme. But don’t begin until you count thecost.” (Luke 14:27-28 LB) It cost herconvenience—she had to travel to Bethlehem, thento Egypt. “All these things that I once thought veryworthwhile—now I’ve thrown them all away so that I can put my trust and hope inChrist alone.” (Philippians 3:7 LB) Whatare we willing to give up?

Goduses people who dare to trust His promises. “Mary asked the angel, ‘But how can I have a baby? I am a virgin.’ The angel replied, ‘The Holy Spirit shall come upon you, and the power of Godshall overshadow you…For every promise from God shall surely come true.’” (Luke1:34-35, 37 LB) God uses people who arewilling to step out in faith and do things that make no sense. Are there no miracles? Are we afraid? We want to be in control. We need to wait, giving God opportunity to dosomething. “What is impossible with menis possible with God.” (Luke 18:27 NIV) He uses us when we want God’s will like a drowning person wantsair. Instead of panicking, Mary prayed,and praised. Elizabeth told her, “You believed that Godwould do what He said; that is why He has given you this wonderful blessing.” (Luke 1:45 LB) How much do we trust God?

Hewants us to “be me in the world” day byday. What are we going to give Jesus forChristmas? He has everything; He wantsyou!

Cindy Padgett sends in a prayer request for her sister, Brenda (Sue). Her mammogram has shown another lump on the same side as her previous cancer. They are doing a biopsy on Jan. 9th to determine the type of cancer and how to treat it. Please pray for her healing and Lou (her husband. They are still trying to recover from Lou's throat cancer and are still seeing doctors for that as well.

Praise: Cindy's mom is home and doing fairly well. They did get her bleeding under control by stopping her Plavix. She just needs to het her strength back. Please pray for her continued healing

Yearsago someone asked a raggedy boy why he walked clear across town (Chicago) to goto Dwight W. Moody’s church instead of going to one of the many churches hepassed. He said, “That’s easy! At Mr. Moody’s church they love afella.” John 3:16 says that, “God lovedto world so much that He gave his only Son. . .” How can a baby make so much difference? He was no ordinary baby: he was God in theflesh. God came to this planet becauseHe knew we had a great need we could not fill. He entered the world the same way we do so we would not be afraid ofHim. He taught us about God. He didn’t stay in the manger; he grew up, anddied on the cross in our place.

Because Jesuscame at Christmas, My past can be forgiven. We all have guilt. “All have sinned. . . yet now God declares us‘not guilty’ of offending him IF we trust in Jesus Christ who freely takes awayour sins.” Romans 3:23-24 (LB) Peoplewill do all kinds of things to alleviate the pain: drugs, alcohol, food, work,etc. Only God’s forgiveness can remedyguilt. His forgiveness comes all atonce. His mercy and forgiveness are a freegift. His forgiveness is complete (Heforgets). Our guilt and sin are “buriedin the sea of God’s forgetfulness” and he puts up a sign that says “NoFishing!” 2 Corinthians 5:17 (Ph) says“If anyone is in Christ, he becomes a new person altogether; the past isfinished and gone, everything becomes fresh and new.” He lets us start over.

Because Jesuscame at Christmas, My present problems can be managed. People are stressed out today. The pace of life is wearing us out, andwearing us down. We’re looking for powerand energy to face our problems. Paulsays “I have the strength to face all conditions by the power Christ givesme.” Philippians 4:13 (GN) However, we need to ask ourselves, “Am Iinvolved in things I shouldn’t be involved in?” Do we over-commit? “…God gave usHis own son—can we not trust such a God to give us …everything else weneed?” We live in His grace—live in itnow. We allow Satan to treat us likeburros—loaded up with a heavy load. Whatever 2012 holds, you can face it in God’s strength.

Because Jesuscame at Christmas, My future can be guaranteed. “…Jesus became like us…(to) set free thosewho were laves all their lives because of their fear of death.” Hebrews 2:15-15(GN) The fear of death is a universalproblem. Our mortality is guaranteed.But there is no need to fear something you can plan for, something you canprepare for. We will all come face toface with God. We should walk with God,like Enoch did. It’s as if after one oftheir walks God said to Enoch, “We’re closer to my house; come with me.”

Here are threeChristmas Gifts to you from God. Hisgifts are personal, practical, priceless, and permanent. He gives the Gift of Forgiveness. “Let uspraise God for the FREE GIFT He gave us in His Son…we are set free, our sinsare forgiven.” Ephesisans 1:4-7 (GN) That takes care of my past. Hegives the Gift of Strength; that takes care of the present. Jesus said, “I amleaving you with a GIFT; peace of mind and heart…so don’t be troubled orafraid.” John 14:27 (LB) And He givesthe Gift of Eternal Life. “…the GIFT ofGod is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23. That takes care of my future. Wereceive these gifts by believing; a belief that puts your whole self intoit. Have you accepted these gifts?

Cindy Padgett requests prayer for her mother, Lois Parsons, who is in the hospital again because of low blood levels and chest pain. She is very weak and hasn't been able to do much. Please pray for her strength to return and that they find out what is causing the chest pain.

Also, she requests prayer for herself and Tom: they just finished their last trip to Richmond for his physical therapy, but now she is having problems. She had an appointment in Charlottesville yesterday and has a test on Friday in Richmond. She won't be able to make it to the Christmas party Friday, and says she is "running on empty." She asks us to pray for their spiritual filling as well as the physical problems.

The message onthe second Sunday of Advent was titled “What Time is Christmas.” The universe is still expanding, ever sincethe creation, when God spoke everything into existence, “Let there belight…” We know December 21 as thelongest night of the year. (No, it’sChristmas Eve—ask any child!) ButGalatians 4:4-5 says, “When the right time came, the time God decided on, He sentHis Son, born of a woman…so he could adopt us as His very own children” (LB) God waited until the very right time. “Everything that happens in this worldhappens at the time God chooses.” Eccl. 3:1 (GN)

Christmas is. .. (from Luke 2: The first Christmas)when the angel appeared to the shepherds.

Christmas istime to release my fears to God. Most people are held hostage by their fears. We become so accustomed to fear, we don’teven recognize when people express it. Fear is worry that has turned to meditation on a problem. The angel told the shepherds, “Do not beafraid!” (Luke 2:10) Release youranxiety; there are 365 ‘fear nots’ in the Bible—one for each day. Don’t let fear possess you. Live in the confidence of God. Jesus said “I am the light of the world. So if you follow me you won’t be stumblingthrough the darkness…” (John 8:12, LB) We’re afraid because we’re worried about the future. Christmas comes at the end of the year, andwe don’t know what the New Year will bring.

Christmas istime to renew my faith. The realityof Christmas isn’t any of the movies about it—Santa Clause, the Miracle on 34^thStreet, Santa, Rudolf, or the Grinch. It’s Jesus! The angel told theshepherds “…I bring you the most joyful news ever announced, and it is foreveryone! (Luke 2:10, LB) The church is always trying to get the Good Newsout in new ways. The best way is to livelike we’ve really got good news. John 10:10 tells us that “(Jesus) has comethat you might have life, and have it to the fullest.” We live in a fallenworld, surrounded by bad stuff. Somepeople think they aren’t good enough for God, but remember, you matter toGod. You are not an accident. God wants you to know Him as well as He knowsyou. He knows you intimately. He comes to us in a form we canunderstand. Jesus is God with skin on.

Christmas istime to receive forgiveness. Godsent us a savior because we couldn’t save ourselves. Not with religion, or self-improvement. We need a savior. “Today in the town of David a Savior has beenborn for you; he is Christ the Lord!” (Luke 2:11) How do I let Christ save me? Acknowledge that I can’t do it myself. John 3:16-17 tells us “for God loved thisworld so much that he gave his only Son, so that anyone who believes in himwill not perish but have eternal life. God didn’t send his Son into the world to condemn it, but to save it!” Guilt is hard to get rid of. People live with fear and guilt, but Jesuscan take care of both.

Christmas istime to rebuild relationships. Godwants us to live in peace with all men; this includes our families as well asothers. Make peace with them. “Glory to God in the highest, and on earthpeace, goodwill toward men.” (Luke 2:14KJV) give your guilt to Jesus and thenmove on. “If we are living in the light of god’s presence, just as Christ does,then we have wonderful fellowship and joy with each other.” (1 John 1:7 LB) Take time to focus on your relationship withGod. Then do whatever He tells you todo. Christmas is time to meetChrist: “It is time for you to turn tome, your Lord, and I will come and pour out blessings upon you.” (os. 10:13 GN)

Gay's brother, Gene Bolling, is out of surgery; his liver was blocked by stones, which they were able to remove. And there is no cancer! The doctors are saying the pancreas is full of infection but no cancer. Infection is rampant in his body since the liver could not filter, and bile has been seeping out from his gall bladder. Praise God for His divine intervention! We serve a God who still performs miracles, not the least of which is Gene's assurance to his sister that Jesus is his savior. We serve the God who Provides, Makes Whole, Restores, Heals, and Comforts. Bless His Holy Name!

"I just received word my brother is dying. He was admitted with liver failuse nd they have discovered pancreatic cance. His gall bladder is enlarged du to the liver duct blockage. Apparently, signs of this have been going on. The can cer isn't what is going to kill him first, it's the blockage in his liver. They will be trying to open the ducts today and biopsy the liver. His name is Gene Bolling. There is no visible sign he has a relationship with the Lord. He has had a rowdy life and is un-churched. He called one of his reenactment buddies who is a Methodist preacher to come so he could make funeral arrangements, and tol his wife, Carolyn, there were things he needed to show her. He knows he is dying.
Please pray for my brother. I don't want to lose him, but I just can't bear knowing he may not have made a decision for the Lord. I'm heartbroken."

The message onthe first Sunday of Advent was titled “The Light of Christmas.” Light is mentioned throughout the Bible. In fact, God’s first command was “Let therebe light” when He spoke everything into existence during the Creation. Jesus said, “I have come as a light to shinein this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer wanderin darkness.” (John 12:46). We live in adark world. We fear darkness: it’s whatwe don’t know that scares us. Lightdispels darkness: God’s light has that effect on us.

Everyone hasdark days, when we don’t want to face the world. Dark days of disappointment. There are lots of things to be disappointedabout today: loss of a job, or a home, or a marriage, or a loved one. Mary, too, experienced disappointment:instead of delivering her baby at home, surrounded by family, she gave birth toJesus alone, in a strange place. Job said, “I hoped for happiness and light, buttrouble and darkness came instead.” (Job 30:26)

Dark days ofdistress. The psalmist says, “I havecried desperately for help, but still it does not come.” (Psalm 22:1) We are stretched to the limit, financially,physically or relationally. Mary wasdistressed, having to ride on a donkey and walk 80 miles from her home in Nazareth to Bethlehem“being great with child.”

Dark days ofdoubt. “The one who walks in thedark does not know where he is going.” (John 12:35) There are times when we can’t see what’sahead, but God has promised that His Word is like a flashlight, guiding us onthe path. (Psalm 119:105)

Dark days ofdepression. Life presses in and we’reso blue we don’t know what to do. “Thethought of my pain…is bitter poison. Ithink of it constantly, and my spirit is depressed.” (Lamentations3:19-20) Does anyone really care? “Lover,friend, acquaintance—all are gone. Thereis only darkness everywhere.” (Psalm 88:18). Every one of us is heading into a problem, is in the middle of aproblem, or has just come out of a problem. Where do you turn? What’s the antidote?

God cares aboutyou. He lights a light and pushes backthe darkness. “You, Lord, are my light;you dispel my darkness!”(1 Samuel 22:29)

How can Jesusdispel my darkness? He will encourageme when I’m disappointed. Jesus iswith us—we’re not alone. “The Lord isnear to those who are discouraged; he sees those who have lost all hope.”(Psalm 34:18) His name is Emmanuel—God withus. He has plans for you. “The plans I have for you, says the Lord, areplans to prosper you, not to harm you…to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah29:11)

He willstrengthen me when I’m distressed. It’s easy for us to diminish ourselves, but He says. “You can do it!” Philippians 4:13 says “I have the strengthfor all things in Christ who empowers me—I am ready for anything and equal toanything through Him who infuses inner strength in me.” Trust God to work on the issues that distressus.

He will guideme when I’m doubtful. When I don’tknow where to go, he will guide my feet. “Jesus said, I am the Light of the world. So if you follow me, you won’t be stumblingthrough the darkness, for living light will flood your path.” (John 8:12)

He will liftme up when I’m depressed. Embracethe struggle: it is to strengthenus. “It is possible for light to turnthe thing it shines upon into light also!” (Ephesians 5:23) “The light produces in people all that isgood and right and true.” (Ephesians 5:9) …the darkness in our lives disappears and the new light of life inChrist shines in.” (1 John 2:8) TheChristmas star—others saw it, but the wise men followed it. God sent His son in the darkest time of theyear. He is interested in us. He wants a relationship with us.

The message was titled "The Lord is My Shepherd," and the scripture was Psalm 23. We live in a time when many are discontent. But Paul tells us in Philippians 4:11-12 that we are to be content in any and every situation. God doesn't want His children to be spoiled brats. We need to have an attitude of gratitude.

In this life the Good Shepherd gives us ALL we NEED. We need to quit looking to get our needs met in all the wrong places. Isaiah 53:6 tells us that "We all, like sheep, have gone astray." Being compared to sheep is not a compliment: they are some of the dumbest animals on earth, straying into dangerous areas, eating grass down to the root, fearful of moving water. Without a shepherd to move them to new pastures, guide them through the rocky places, and lead them to calm waters, they will die. Jesus saw us as being "like sheep without a shepherd." (Matthew 9:36). The sheep need a shepherd who MAKES them lie down. They have to be well-fed, they must be unafraid, they must be content, and there must be harmony in the flock. The same is true of the church; we need a spirit of unity, grace and harmony.

Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 10:13 that God is faithful, and will not let us be tempted beyond what we can bear. The Good Shepherd KNOWS our weakness, and protects us. (Psalm 32:6-7) Lost sheep can't find their way back, but Psalm 23:3 assures us that "He restores my soul." "He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and life for righteousness; by His wounds you have been healed," Peter tells us in 1 Peter 2:2 Our name is on the cross. He changes us from one kind of person to another kind of person. 1 Peter 2:25 says we were going astray, but have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of our souls.

The Good Shepherd clears the way before us, even through the rocky places. (Psalm 23:3) In the face of death, the Good Shepherd protects us from evil. (Psalm 23:4) We fear the shadow of death: the loss of a job, marriage or loved one, the death of a dream or career. Fear can control your whole being. (Hebrews 2:15) We need not fear, for He is with us. Psalm 23:4-5 assures us that God's protection and guidance offer us peace and protection while we're alive, and the promise of heaven when we die.

At the judgment, the Good Shepherd promises eternal life. Jesus paid the price: we don't have to. Jesus has mercy on us. He's loving and forgiving. He wants our love, he wants all of us. Get to know Him. Let gratitude reach out. Embrace Him. Praise Him.

Sermon Notes, Oct. 30, 2011

District Superintendent Dr. Phil Fuller preached the sermon Sunday. His scripture reading was 2 Chronicles 20, which he related to today's circumstances as he read. We're at the corner of God's Way and My Own Way, and it's a daily decision to live out God's way.

King Jehoshaphat had a problem: a vast army of many nations had come to make war on the Israelites. Furthermore, the enemy were right there. (v. 2) We also have problems, problems right here and right now, and the enemy wants to scare us, and to defeat us just as in Jehoshaphat's day. What do you do when you have a problem? Jehoshaphat "inquired of God" and called for a national fast. (v. 3) We need to do that today, too. The people of Judah came from miles around to fast and pray. (v. 5-12)

Then the Spirit of the Lord came. (v. 14) He still comes when we fast and pray in earnest. The prophet told the king and the people "Do not be afraid or discouraged . . . For the battle is not yours but God's." (v. 15) This is true today also. We are God's people, following God's way, and we can depend on Him to fight our battles.

The prophet gave the people specific instructions from the Lord on how to meet the enemy, and reminded them again that this was not their fight, but God's. They were not to be afraid or discouraged, but to face the enemy, and the Lord would be with them. (v. 16-17)

As they marched out in the morning, Jehoshaphat admonished them to have faith, then he appointed singers to give thanks to God—before the battle. The singers went out at the head of the army. (v. 21) They didn't wait until the army was defeated to give God praise. That is a good strategy for us as well: to give thanks for the victory before it comes. We need to get on with the praise!

The vast army WAS defeated. The enemy got after each other, and destroyed each other. (v. 22-23) Jehoshaphat's army saw God's deliverance, and it took three days for them to collect all the plunder. (v. 24-25) They went back to the valley where they'd praised God; the valley of doom had become the valley of praise.

In the midst of our problems, we can remember Jehoshaphat and the men of Judah, and the victory the Lord gave them. 1 Thessalonians 5:16 tells us "Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." We can trust the Lord as they did. GOD IS WITH US! If you know the Lord is with you, you can do anything He asks you to do.

Pastor Lonnie continued his sermon series "Come Before Winter," from Paul's letter to Timothy from prison before he was to be executed. The scripture reading was 2 Timothy 1:3-8, with special emphasis on verse 5, where Paul reminds Timothy of his spiritual heritage from his Grandmother Lois and his mother, Eunice.

Pastor Lonnie remembered his own grandmother telling him, "You'll do better if you listen to God." Her faith was sincere: daily, living as a servant, and she knew her mission, just as Timothy's grandmother did.

Grandma's faith was daily—it was simple, and lived out. It was a listening faith, even though she didn't always have the answers. She knew God's Word was not just for information, but for transformation. Do you struggle with maybes? Be honest with yourself and with God. There's an intimacy in questions. It's rooted in humility.

Grandma's faith evidenced itself in her servanthood. Lonnie still remembers the Sunday dinners at Grandma's. Jesus, too, was a servant. The church must serve to survive. Know that you can rely on and trust Jesus. The church is a group of people that will help you through your struggles; Jesus is making a whole new world. Share what God has done for you and through you.

Timothy knew his mission: he was the apostle to the Gentiles. Paul was willing to die for what he believed in. We have a mission too, right here, as well as in the rest of the world. We need to spend our energy on things that are "mission critical," the things that are most important. People matter the most.

The Gospel is a gospel of change. God changes people, just as he changes lives. (Romans 12:1-2) We are to be stewards of all He gives us: not only materially, but spiritually. We should hold tight to God, and loosely to things of the world.

Grandmas pass on the legacy of faith. The faith of this church is daily. We are to be God's servants in a hurting world. That is our mission and our legacy.

Pastor Lonnie's sermon on October 16, 2011, was titled, "Come Before Winter," and the scripture was 2 Timothy 1:7-12, written when Paul was in prison, suffering for his faith.

We are living frustrated lives because we're out of touch with the reality or our spiritual lives. We become spiritually emaciated. Mr. Yates owned a sheep farm in west Texas, barely eking out a living. He gave geologists permission to drill a wildcat oil well, and they found that his ranch was sitting on an oil field: more than 80,000 barrels a day were pumped out. Mr. Yates had owned the oil when he bought the ranch and its mineral rights, but he was living in poverty. He didn't know the oil was there; he owned it, but he didn't possess it. That illustrates the tragedy of our Christian lives: the moment we become children of God, we become heirs with Jesus, and all God's resources are available to us. But most of us live in spiritual poverty because we don't know how to dig into these resources.

Everything we need is available but we don't possess it. The Holy Spirit is powerful and available. He has a purpose; he is a helper, active and involved. Acts 1 assures us that the Holy Spirit makes God known to us, through the Bible and through the testimony of what God has done for us. If the Holy Spirit is in us, is there anything we can't handle?

Paul reminds Timothy that God has given him a spirit of power, of love, and of self-discipline. Timothy was to use his talents and skills to advance the Gospel beyond where Paul had taken it. God is calling us, as a church, to advance the Gospel beyond where is has been. We've been created for just this time. He has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, of love, and of self-discipline.

Matthew tells the story of the merchant who found treasure hidden in a field. He sold everything he had and bought the field. (Matt. 13:44) That's what He wants from us: to give Him everything. Then He gives back to us, everything we need, trusting us to take care of everything he's given us. We are agreeing to be stewards of all he gives us

We are to hold it lightly: it doesn't belong to us; it belongs to Him. Hold lightly to stuff, and hold tightly to God.

Then Pastor Lonnie read a letter of encouragement from the District Superintendent, Dr. Phil Fuller. Dr. Fuller is sending Rev. George Stevenson this Sunday, October 23, to help us through this time of pastoral transition and to answer our questions.

Pastor Lonnie closed his sermon by reminding us that as members of this church we have pledged to uphold the church: to sustain it through prayer, our presence and participation, to bring our talents and gifts to God, and to do His work.

Be God's steward. Care for His things, care for His people, and deliver His message.

Since Pastor Lonnie was at the Bivocational Pastors Retreat, Rev. Dan White preached Sunday's sermon.

The text was Ezekiel 47:1-12, where Ezekiel tells of his vision for the future in which a river flows east from the sanctuary, getting deeper and deeper until it flows into the Dead Sea, bringing that sea to life.

Life is unnerving. Sometimes it doesn't make sense. We live in tough and dangerous times, with earthquakes, gangs, abortions, mothers that abandon their children, and all kinds of evil. But God is watching over us, and we need to thank Him. Ezekiel shows us that our God is not removed from us; He doesn't leave us; He is with us.

Life-giving promise starts in the sanctuary. It starts as a trickle and flows, coming together and growing. Just as the water in Ezekiel's vision, so the Living Water in us starts in the sanctuary.

Where the river of God flows, there is life and growth. Just as there were trees, and swarms of living things along the river Ezekiel saw, the Living Water in us continues to flow and grow as we are obedient to God and share His salvation with others. The Living Water brings vitality. (John 7:38) There is a new tomorrow when God comes.

How do we get this Living Water? The Holy Spirit speaks to us. When He speaks, we need to obey.

Sermon Notes, 9-18-11

Pastor Lonnie's sermon on Sunday was titled "Desperate for an Anchor." The scripture was Psalm 121. He started by comparing the TV show Desperate Housewives to real life. He said the residents of Wisteria Lane are philosophers and theologians. From the outside, it seems as if they would have perfect lives, but each family lives in desperation.

Family is a theological concept. The first example of family is found in the Trinity: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. God's love is unconditional and others-centered.

Every human family is dysfunctional. When we don't experience unconditional, others-centered love, we look for an anchor in other places. We lose any sense of security, and begin to drift. We experience a loss of welcome, a loss of protection, loss of childhood, loss of communication, loss of parental approval, shame, or lack of encouragement and hope. Life is meaningless. In desperate households, you drift from one thing to the next, without the anchor of unconditional love.

Where do you take your desperation? Take it to Jesus. God will guide and protect you. He loves unconditionally. You were made for God's pleasure: He loves you desperately. Then why all the pain? Sometimes "Pain is God's megaphone," (C.S. Lewis). God's not mad at you, He's mad about you.

The root of our problem is we think God's holding back; we need to let Him be our anchor. When the storms of life hit, we hide, just like Adam and Eve did. The Lord will protect you. He'll protect your soul, no matter how desperate you are.

Don't take your desperation into your own hands! We get so busy we have no time for God, but Psalm 115 tells us the Lord remembers us and will bless those who fear the Lord. Sometimes we are all about speed; we worship idols, we worship ourselves; we diminish ourselves and wind up with nothing but a desperate heart. Our love gets distorted.

But your anchor is God's desperate, unconditional love for you. John 15:15 tells us that He doesn't call us servants, but friends. Let Jesus end your search for some other anchor. Let Him into your life. Let Him keep your very soul. Let Him into your household.

This week: take 30 minutes to write down what keeps you from being desperate for God. Then commit to praying for help to remove that barrier.

Please pray for Gay Hopkin's sister’s stepson. He has been diagnosed with cancer of the esophageal, spine, lymph, and liver. He has been given 6 mths at best. The real tragedy in this is he does not know the Lord. His name is Dennis. The family is just beside themselves. Benny’s mom was diagnosed just the week before this with breast cancer. She is 92. This is not the first son Benny has lost to cancer. His younger son died several years ago….Steve was saved. Benny himself is a cancer survivor. Please pray for Dennis’ salvation.

I have been dealing with a lot of physical issues. Many explanations have been ruled out by various tests. Most recent is the speculation I have RA. Please pray for an answer….this testing is getting old, in addition to expensiveJ

Thank you for your Prayers. Here is an update of some of the items we requested prayer for.

Bible College Class:

The Bible College classes were super and well attended. Sylvia Holiday, from New Zealand, was our guest lecturer. Sylvia is an Ordained Minister and professional counselor in New Zealand. This is her second time visiting the Solomon Islands. We praise the Lord for the 21 students she had in her morning class, Interpersonal Communication; and the 25 attending her evening class, Christian Worship. I (George) had 12 student in my Hebrews & General Epistles class. Thanks for your prayers as God moved mightily in these classes.

Children’s Camp:

The Honiara Zion Church is hosting a Children’s camp this weekend. Tomorrow (Friday) night I will be preaching the opening service for the children. Nancy will then have the Saturday service. The new church in White River will be attending. Pray for the White River church. The White River Church is a new daughter church started by the Zion church. They invited the DS and wife a few week ago. Then last Sunday I returned when the Zion Pre-teen class visited, led by their Sunday School teacher Mairy. This church is made up of mostly children, but they are on fire. Pray for the children that God will raise up some teens and adults that are on fire for Jesus.

Miller’s Vacation:

Pray for Nancy and I as we take a much needed vacation to Australia. We depart Solomon Islands on Monday 20^th June and return Monday 4^th July. Please be in prayer for us during this time.

District Youth/Women’s camp:

In our last news letter I made an error in the dates. The correct dates for this camp is 27^th June through 2^nd July. This camp will be held in Munda, on the Island of New Georgia in the Western Province. One of our newer churches Sovereign Grace will host this camp. Pray for a wonderful outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon our youth attending camp.

Other event coming up:

1. September 13-18 the International Board of Education is going to meet with our South Pacific Nazarene Theological College and conduct a review at that time. Please be in prayer for this meeting.

2. Then September 20 – October 4^th will be another block course at our Bible College and Dr. David McEwan from NTC, Brisbane, Australia will be our guest lecturer. I will also be teaching a course.

3. October 26 – 30 we will be attending a mission leadership conference in Manila, Philippines.

4. Pray for Rex as he prepares to attend, representing our Solomon Island youth at the 3^rd wave conference in Thailand in January 2012. Rex is a relatively new Christian and member of our Sovereign Grace Church in Munda. For a few months he lived at our house while volunteering at ZCA (Zion Christian Academy). Now he is working as a teacher at the school established this year at the Sovereign Grace Church.

5. In addition to these meetings I plan to visit churches in the provinces.

Personal Prayer Request:

Please remember us in prayer as we want to see a mighty revival and a great awakening and an awesome movement of the Holy Spirit within the Solomon Islands. In recent days I have been battling discouragement and we request that you bathe us in prayer.

This couple has been our camp caretakers for over 20 years.

On Thursday, June 2 we participated in the 30th Annual CulpeperFest with the Culpeper Chamber of Commerce. At our booth we partnered with Genesis Clydesdales Farm (Dave & Lisa Giza) to provide wagon rides to attendees and at that time we took the opportunity to raise awareness for the continuing needs in Haiti. Riders were asked to give their loose change to go towards the drilling of fresh water wells in Haiti.

Did you know... That 80% of the population currently residing in tent communities live on less than $2 a day? Finding money to BUY water is a daily struggle. At a small, desolate camp of ripped tents nearby, a gleaming water tank is propped up on bricks. Camp-dwellers said it was installed by the International Organization for Migration, more than nine months after the January earthquake damaged their homes. But it's empty because it has not been filled with water.

Please give your loose change now through August and help provide a solution by drilling a well, not a water tank that needs filling, but a well that is accessible and available to the Haiti peoples. This offering will be presented at the NMI Convention at District Assembly.

Unfortunately his body has not been able to heal itself and last night the decision was made to amputate above the knee. This morning Cindy and Vicki are traveling to Richmond to be with Tom. Surgery is scheduled for some time today. We need to be praying for traveling mercies, continued strength for Cindy and Vicki, and an uneventful surgery for Tom. As information and updates are are available we will send them out.

Ginny Itterly (mother of Dee) has recently been diagnosed with COPD and still having the lung issue - a biospy will be done in June.

Donna Edwards was released last night at 3am and is home today resting. The tests were inconclusive but she will be following up with her cardiologist. She is very grateful for the cares and concerns of our church..

Tammy Twellenger tests did not reveal any answers and will be going for more testing in the future. She continues to suffer from dizziness and other symptoms, pray for God's healing.

Dear Prayer Partner,

Thank you for your prayers for us during our home assignment. We are now back home in the Solomon Islands. I want to thank the churches in Oklahoma, Texas, South Carolina (including Charlotte Trinity in NC), Arizona, Oregon, and Washington who opened their churches, homes, and hearts so we could challenge your congregation with the stories of what God is doing. I want to remind you as our prayer partner that you are so vital in the mission and ministry. As the global community is confronted with many natural disasters, wars, tension and other needs, it is so encouraging to realize you are there with your prayers and finances. I want to thank you especially for your faithfulness to the World Evangelism Offering, and Faith Promise. It was our pleasure to meet and visit with many of you who faithfully pray for us. Thanks again.

We had a fairly full schedule, especially considering the Christmas Holiday, which is not an especially good time for deputation services. But we only had two Sundays off. We thank the Lord for the 4 district tours we had. We shared in a total of 60 different venues, and had 77 services, including Sundays and weekdays, Faith Promise banquets, Sunday School, Children services such as Caravan camp, Children’s Mission day, Children’s church, and a class at SNU. The United States experienced one of the coldest winters ever on recorded history. The Lord took care of us in a remarkable way. We went to SC after the snow had melted off the roadways from an unusually heavy snow for that part of the country [actually they rarely get an accumulation of snow]. While in South Carolina, Dallas and OKC had a blizzard, or such as schools were closed. The day we flew out of Charlotte, NC it was snowing but we arrived back in Dallas to fair weather. We did get to see around 9-12 inches accumulation of snow at Prescott, Arizona while at the district camp site and then more snow in Washington, but there was no ice and the driving was fine. Thank you for your prayers for our traveling safety, as we flew and then traveled around in a rental car. Your prayers were answered and we did not have trouble.

Our Grandson Zach traveled with us for 5-6 weeks of our trip. It was a blessing having him along and he really enjoyed it too and meeting the wonderful people.

Solomon Island Internet: (Expensive and Slow)

We are back in the Solomon Islands and one of the really noticeable differences in the Solomon Islands in the Internet Speed. We have “high speed (ADSL)” but it is so slow, compared to the USA. But at least it is expensive here too, and we are only allowed one gig download/upload for our monthly fee of US $100. These days with our three computers we approach the 1 gig with just the virus and other program updates.

That said, “PLEASE, may I request that you do NOT send us large [more than 50 KB] unsolicited emails.” You notice I don’t send photos or attachments with our prayer letter and there is a reason for that. It is expensive. I know there are a lot of excellent things floating around and some of them are very good. But please do not forward these on to us. God will still bless you, and regardless of what the email says about what will happen or about showing your love for God if you pass it on. Please refrain. To send photos reduce the size so it will be small.

This only pertains to the large documents, please keep the prayer letters (with minimal formatting), cards, and emails, coming. If you see something we might be interested in you can suggest a URL that we can go to if in fact it is something we would like or need for ministry.

Well after talking to the doctors and our pastor this week and discussing our situation as a family tonight, we have decided to hold off on any form of treatment right now, besides some nutritional changes. We plan on having another MRI in the next several weeks to make sure the tumor is gone. From a worldly medical perspective, the prognosis for this condition is not good at all and sadly conventional treatment does not add much time or quality of life. On a positive note, we now must REALLY leave this in God’s hands! If the typical treatments would potentially heal or help to significantly prolong life on this side of eternity, we would absolutely consider it, but because it does not, we are surrendering ALL TO GOD! By no means is this a negative decision, since we are rejoicing in Molly’s total healing. We all feel that she has way too much to do for God’s Kingdom for Him to take her home at this time. Rejoice with us and continue to believe for this miracle by saying the Scripture below OUT LOUD as often as you can! (I know it’s hard to believe, but yes, Molly used to be rebellious and she may have even sinned once or twice!)

She seems to be doing better. Her strength on her right side is remarkably better than even a few hours ago. It was cool to see the doctor and nurse in here taking off the bandages from the surgery with the praise music playing in the background. I asked Molly if she appreciated the music and she smiled as big as I’ve seen her smile since before the surgery. She said her name again to the AM nurse. No results yet on the MRI. The nurse said yesterday was a day of rest, but this will be a day of work. I already got tasked with making her do a breathing exercise to get her lungs open and clear. I made her do 3 sets of 10. We usually go to the gym on Saturday morning anyway, so this week is no different. I get to be her personal trainer today! The incision area looks great. They only cut off about an inch of hair and it’s only around the incision itself. Things are definitely looking up.

Keep up the prayers. Today looks like it will be a working day!

The drummer of the group, John Mizerak's wife has recently been diagnosed with a brain tumor the size of a tennis ball behind her left eye. She is currently in surgery. Tom - Will be undergoing surgery at the VA Hospital in Richmond on Monday. If all goes as planned it should be outpatient returning home the same day. Lew Cressel (Cindy's brother-in-law) Underwent surgery last week for throat cancer, a couple of spots were found. He will be receiving radiation treatment for 4-5 weeks followed by chemo. Cancer has been found in his lymph nodes in the neck. Pray for him and his wife Sue as they travel this road together.

Nina (sister of Jaime Lamb, our neighbor) She was seen at the ER for OD but was released later in the evening. She is very troubled, pray for her release from this addiction and for all family members involved.

Lucy continues to experience pain in foot, pray for pain relief and healing.

Darlene (Liz H. sister) undergoing chemo to continue the cancer remission. Remember her in your prayers as she continues to battle cancer.

Received word from PL, Tom's left foot is broken in 5 places and his ankle is broken in 3. They have stabilized his foot and provided pain meds. They are planning to send him home tonight and they will reassess in the morning whether to go to the VA Hospital in Richmond or to stay here for treatment at Fauquier. His blood pressure is quite high. Please pray for rest and pain relief for tonight and guidance as they make decisions regarding his treatment.

Tom Padgett - Was in a head on collision this afternoon traveling down 621. The driver of the other vehicle crossed the yellow line and hit him, the steering column broke and hit his chest and the front of the vehicle crumpled. He was able to exit the vehicle through the passenger side and has been taken to Fauquier Hospital experiencing chest pain. Pastor is with Cindy - we will send an update when we have more information.

Destanii & Dimarkus' dad's funeral arrangements are in progress through Horizon Funeral Home. At this time it appears the wake will be Thursday with the funeral on Friday, no times have been posted. Please continue to pray for them during this time of grief.

We've just learned of the below and would like to ask for your prayers:

Ed's brother Joe, his wife Paula and their daughter-in-law Cynthia are in Wellesley, MA this evening to get details on the injuries of their son/husband who was recently injured as a result of the truck he was in being hit by an IED. Cynthia received a call from Matt and the sketchy details are that he has a fractured pelvis, which could be causing back problems and his foot is in a boot as it may be sprained. They are shipping him to Germany for 3 months of rehab and then sending him home. He was awarded the Purple Heart today.

This was Matt's 3rd assignment to the Middle East, although the first since getting married in May! He is a firefighter in Beverly, MA when not serving his country. Please keep them all in your prayers and hope for a speedy recovery.

Update - Haitian Adoption

Barbara Eddy (Friend of Lonnie & Jan) Homestudy completed after three months. Parents voluntarily gave up their rights to my Haiti three-heartbreak! Secured a Chrisitan French teacher to translate the documents- she totally understood this adoption is being orchestrated by God, including our meeting! Plus have a new Haitian friend who is going to teach me Haitian Creole and help my children transition to the US! Blessings daily!

Donna Huckabee - Had an ER run last night due to heart problems, she was released. Pray for lower blood pressure and rest.

Andrew Huckabee - Diagnosed with Glaucoma in his good eye doctors are treating him for the increased pressure. Pray for complete healing.

Arlene (Liz's sister) - PRAISE Her recent bone scan showed the cancer has not grown and may be able to travel for a Thanksgiving visit.

Chelsee Fincham - (Liz' granddaughter) Continues to suffer from migraines, doctors are devising a treatment plan.

Savannah Reign (Valentine's unborn granddaughter) PRAISE - Is healthy and due in March.

Thanks for your prayers, here is an update.
Bible College Classes:
The Bible College Classes were a huge success and well attended. We had a total of 22 different students attend one or all three of the Bible College classes. In addition we had 2 people who audited one or more of the courses. We are grateful for Dr. David McEwan from our NTC in Brisbane, Australia. This is his sixth consecutive year for him to visit our campus and teach block courses for us. God is so faithful and is doing awesome things in the Solomon Islands.

In Church Growth and Evangelism Class it was great and I feel the students were all challenged to return and evangelize their local communities. We emphasized the “Each One, Win One”, “Big Brother, Big Sister”, and “Prayer Cell” plans for church growth and evangelism. We are trying to get back the book of ACTS strategy for evangelism. The Church of the Nazarene was begun as a movement and our desire for the Solomon Islands is to return and develop the passion for souls as in Acts and once again rekindle the fire.
I was busy preparing for the pastor’s conference and so did not attend Dr. McEwan classes but he reported that they went well.

I request prayer for two of our Bible College Students. John is a relatively new believer and is called to pastor. He is beginning his pastoral ministry in the church where his uncle is currently pastor. This uncle is elderly and the church is spiritually weak. In this church John is the one of only a few men attending regularly. Pray for a smooth transition and that John can reach out to the community, which is mostly relatives.
James is a new student, beginning a new church on the island of Vella la Vella.   A day or so after James and his father arrived in Honiara so James could attend BC class, a man from their place living in Honiara died suddenly and the belief was that James &/or his father performed witchcraft on this man which caused his death. So then the angry relatives of the deceased man, burned James’ and his father’s houses at home. Then James received word that his teen age daughter was seriously ill, so he left the Bible College early. I am really encouraged because after arriving home James called me and told me that he is not deterred and has already moved out into a new area. Pray for the light of the gospel to penetrate these people’s hearts so steeped in witchcraft and spirit worship. They have accepted Christianity, but are still deeply attached to their animistic religion.

Pastors/Wives’ conference:
The pastors and wives’ conference was a huge success. I knew it would be good and the Lord would bless because during the week leading up to the conference there was a lot of things that came up attempting to distract us from the final preparation.   I don’t have time to mention all of them but to give you an idea our printer went out as I was printing the materials for conference, we had a water leak in the bathroom, the school held their end of term program and fund raiser, and many other disturbances most of which required urgent attention.

Note: The printer was repaired, the water leak is still dripping with a bowl under it, and the school fund raiser was a huge success.
District Superintendent Rev. Peter Degene, from the Hagen district of Papua New Guinea, and Evangelist Rev. Nicholas Wako also from PNG delivered the messages and taught classes that really challenged our pastors.

The theme of the conference was Living a Life [worthy of the calling, of love, and pleasing to the Lord]. This was taken from Ephesians 4 & 5 and Colossians 1.
As an illustration of unity, I had each pastor set beside his wife for the entire program. Culturally husbands and wife set on separate sides of the church. We saw husbands and wives reconcile to each other and some came to the altar and testified how their was disunity in their relationship and how it had hindered their ministry. The challenge was given to pray and seek the source and not chase after money, cargo, and other resources. They were encouraged and challenged to run their church without asking for outside [that is without asking anyone but God in prayer] assistance. We want our pastors to have a new mentality, please remember them in prayer as it will not be easy but we will continue to bring a change.

In November, Nazarenes from all over the world are being challenged to give the single largest offering for World Evangelism in the history of our church, a WEF PLUS offering. As you know the WEF is the life-line for Nazarene missions and your continued support pays the missionaries’ salaries and keeps them on the field.   Our global church is witnessing unprecedented growth, which brings with it financial challenges. Also the world-wide economic downturn intensifies the challenge, but Nazarenes have always been faithful in rallying to meet any and all challenges.
Our Solomon Island district NMI President, Osborn Fagea, gave the challenge for each adult member in town to give a donation equivalent to US $10 per person which will be quite a sacrifice for our Solomon Islanders. As your local church gives this challenge please give the most generous offering possible.

Especially pray for two teens as we depart Solomon Islands for home assignment. Hannah has been staying with us this year and attending our ZCA school, where Nancy is the Principal. Ezra, has a chicken project near our house and takes care of his chickens to pay school fees, also attending ZCA. They are both strong Christian young people, very active in the church, and I know the Lord will watch over them, but pray that they will have peace, and experience the Lord’s provision.

She has been suffering with diverticulitis for many months and this surgery is to remove a portion of bowel. She will be hospitalized for several days following the surgery.

Nepal Update: This message was received at 2:30 am: We are stuck along side the road with a flat, and a spare that's flat, on our way back to Kathmandu. But God is good...and we were able to find a tire repair shop...but all is done by hand so it's a long wait...but we are thankful we weren't in the middle of nowhere.

I (Cammie Donarski) heard from Carolyn today around noon and there it is 8:30 p.m. She said the job there is finished!
They were told the Nepal workers thought they would only get the main building done.
Carolyn said, "The Lord helped us and we rocked, and both were finished."
"The Itahari Nazarene Church had a party for us tonight and we had a traditional Nepali meal.....delicious."
Tomorrow we leave to see a CDC completed by another W&W team in another town and to interact with the children...on our way to Chitwan National Park for a safari.
Then back to Kathmandu to begin the long trip home on Saturday night.
A lot of traveling left.

I am so excited!!! Mark called me this morning from Nepal!!!! They found a little internet cafe and can call us! Please continue to pray for the team, they covet your prayers! Mark said it has been very hot and the team is trying to stay ......hydrated! They are working on this CDC center out in the middle of a rice patty field! Please pray that God would protect them while traveling to and from the work site, Mark said the traffic is absolutely crazy there, out of control! Also, one more request, one of the team members is VERY SICK, bad pains internally and had to go back to the hotel all by himself by taxi to lay down, his name is Dennis. Thank you prayer warriors!!!

This is to inform you that on September 17, 2010 Friday the Police has submitted the Challan (Charge Sheet) in the court against Mrs.Thangi Pawar (CDC Project Leader), Mr. Sunil Tandiya (J.F.Team Member) and Mr Santosh Choudhary (CDC Teacher). In this charge sheet they have charged them with 3-4 Madhya Pradesh Religious Freedom Act, saying that they were engaged in converting the children by giving them food, cloths, and gifts.

The FIRST HEARING on the case is on October 29, 2010.

Therefore I want to request you please remember us in your daily prayer that through this trial may the name of the Lord be exalted.

Matthew Kowalski (nephew of Karen/Ed) Returning to the Middle East for his 3rd tour.

Elaine Bortner (Karen's Mom) Needs to have knee replcement surgery on both knees. Awaiting doctor appointment last in the month to schedule and determine whether she has cysts or tumors on thigh. It is our hope to have these resolved together.
